The Senior Assistant Dean of Students (SADS) is a leader in the Dean of Students office (DOS). The SADS plans and coordinates day-to-day DOS engagement in large-scale, high-interest, and/or critical events, case management for students under interim actions as authorized by the Dean of Students, and oversight of the University Approved Absence Office. The Senior Assistant Dean of Students may serve as a department liaison to campus and community partners, including but not limited to the Office of Emergency Management and Planning, the Carolina Behavioral Assessment and Management, Educational Policy Committee, and Equal Opportunity and Compliance teams in the collaboration on and coordination of planning, education, outreach, and response efforts.

This position also directs and/or manages aspects of the DOS department functions, including but not limited to large-scale student outreach and support, Student Affairs Critical Incident Response Team (CIRT) training and case review, assessment, emergency planning, and engagement in new student orientation and transition programing. Further, the position may lead, develop, and implement outreach and education materials for varied audiences, across multiple mediums, connected to the position’s responsibilities and department needs.

As the Senior Assistant Dean of Students, this position is an essential resource, advocate, and liaison for Carolina’s diverse population of students, faculty, staff, parents/families, and community partners that support and contribute to student resiliency and success at Carolina. This position is highly collaborative across all functions and responsibilities and plays an active role in non-clinical student case management, generally and especially with increased acuity or complexity, developing and implementing both long- and short-term care and response plans. The Senior Assistant Dean is responsible for maintaining awareness of campus, community, state, and federal resources and initiating and cultivating relationships that advance the Dean of Students team’s ability to respond holistically in support of Carolina students, as well as to campus needs, especially before, during, and after large-scale, critical, or crisis events.

The position includes responsibility for recruitment, selection, training, and supervision of professional staff.

This position serves as a member of the Critical Incident Response Team (CIRT), the Student Affairs on-call student crisis/emergency team and will support campus high interest events and pan-university emergency response needs. This position reports to the Dean of Students, is designated as a Campus Security Authority and Responsible Employee and must work collaboratively with other members of the Dean of Students team, as well as on- and off-campus colleagues and partners.

The Senior Assistant Dean of Students is an in-person role that may have limited hybrid opportunities.
